World Day of Social Justice: India between Growth and Inequality
On this day, we turn our attention to India, a country with impressive economic growth and deep social contrasts. It is now one of the world's fastest-growing economies and has become a key location for IT, industry and global services. However, the wealth of a small elite is also growing rapidly, with the number of millionaires and billionaires rising steadily.

Growth That Does Not Reach Everyone

This economic progress is set against persistent social realities. A large share of the population continues to live in poverty or in a precarious employment situation without a stable income or any social protections.

In rural areas and on the outskirts of major cities, many people still lack reliable access to education, healthcare, and basic infrastructure. Social background, place of residence, and income remain decisive factors shaping life opportunities. They continue to reinforce inequality across generations.

The World Day of Social Justice reminds us that economic success is only sustainable when it benefits everyone. India clearly illustrates how closely progress and inequality can coexist—and why it is so important to think about development holistically, as the interplay of economic growth, social inclusion, and fair opportunities for all.
