Telerefraction: Good eye care even where specialists aren’t immediately available

Telerefraction opens up new possibilities for optical eye care in rural regions. It allows patients in local clinics or eye camps to receive real-time support from qualified specialists remotely – without having to travel long distances.

What does telerefraction mean in practice?

Telerefraction connects on-site field teams with specialists based elsewhere. Measurements and examination data are shared and assessed together – directly as part of the treatment process.

What improves for patients?

  • Shorter travel distances: Specialist assessment happens where patients are examined – long journeys are often no longer necessary.
  • Lower costs: Travel expenses are eliminated, and specialist expertise does not need to be available on-site.
  • Greater reliability: Decisions become more secure, even in more challenging cases.

What does it mean for the health system overall?

Remote optometrists can support multiple rural clinics simultaneously. The GoodVision App also provides insights for quality control, impact measurement, and programme management an important lever for maintaining standards and deploying resources more effectively.
