Donating old glasses: What you need to know

What should you do with your old glasses when you no longer need them? Many people want to donate their used glasses so that others can see better again. It’s a noble idea. But used glasses aren’t automatically a suitable solution. That’s why we at EinDollarBrille take a different approach.

Why Old Glasses Aren't the Answer

Old glasses with visible signs of use

Scratches, material fatigue, or a lack of replacement parts can quickly render a pair of glasses unusable. Once they're broken, they're often difficult to repair on the spot.

Another point is often overlooked: When used eyeglasses are imported from other countries, they can hinder the development of local optical businesses and healthcare services. Instead of strengthening local healthcare services, this creates a dependence on eyeglass donations from abroad.

Measuring the Eyes

For a pair of glasses to be truly helpful, they must be precisely tailored to the person's prescription. With donated glasses, it's usually like winning the lottery.

This is our approach

We don’t distribute used eyeglasses; instead, we manufacture new ones right on site. Each pair of eyeglasses is customized to the patient’s previously measured prescription. The frames, made of sturdy spring steel wire, are durable, and the high-quality lenses with UV400 filters can be replaced as needed. Repairs can also be made using simple tools.

Our approach goes beyond simply manufacturing affordable eyeglasses. The material costs for a OneDollarGlasses pair are about one U.S. dollar. At the same time, we train local people to become skilled workers, create jobs, and strengthen local infrastructure. This results in an eyewear care system that functions locally in the long term and is not dependent on one-time eyeglass donations.

What can I do with my old glasses?

We are always happy to hear from people who want to help others see better. However, we do not accept used glasses. If you no longer need your old glasses, we recommend asking your optician about a return program or contacting your local waste management agency to find out how to dispose of them properly.
